The city of Leipzig, located in eastern Germany, is considered the origin of the peaceful revolution that led to German unity in 1990. Since the Middle Ages Leipzig has been an important business location, which hardly changed in the GDR. Leipzig was and is an important production location, among other things for mechanical engineering and heavy industry. After the German reunification Leipzig had to struggle with the exodus of the population, the number of inhabitants is currently rising again.
