The administrative district Saxon-Switzerland / Osterzgebirge borders from the Saxon state capital Dresden to the northern Bohemian border region of the Czech Republic. Geographically, the district includes the Saxon, Ore Mountains and Lusatian highlands, as well as numerous dams such as the Malter and Klingenberg dams. Large areas of woodland also fall within the district's territory. The district was formed as part of a district area reform in 2008 and numerous large district towns offer cultural and tourist highlights. In Altenberg, for example, the visitor mine can be visited, in Pirna the GDR museum and in Dippoldiswalde the historic old town centre with market square and late Gothic town hall. The region was economically influenced by mining and today is mainly financed by tourism. Special attractions such as the narrow-gauge railway or the Glashütte Clock Museum are available to tourists for this purpose.
