The district of Mittelsachsen lies in the southwest of the Free State of Saxony. The seat of the administrative district is the district town Freiberg. The administrative district reaches from the hilly country of Central Saxony in the north over the foothills of the Erzgebirge to the heights of the Osterzgebirge. Characteristic for the region are mining dumps as well as artificial ponds and art ditches, which ensured the water supply and disposal of the formerly resident ore mining for centuries. This has shaped the region to this day and, together with traditional handicrafts, attracts many tourists. Economically, the semiconductor and solar industries have gained in importance in recent years. In the district there are two famous universities, the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the Hochschule Mittweida (FH).
