The district of Meißen is a district in the northern middle of the Free State of Saxony, through which the Elbe flows. The district town of Meißen is known for its porcelain manufactory. It was the first European manufactory in the year of its foundation in 1710 and still enjoys a worldwide reputation. Agriculture is mainly characterised by the cultivation of fruit and vegetables, while the wine of the region, which is appreciated by connoisseurs and widely known, thrives on the northern slopes of the Elbe. The district also enjoys a good reputation as a tourist destination. It offers many famous buildings, like the castle Moritzburg, which is known from film and television. Wackerbarth Castle is the centre of the easternmost wine region of Germany.
