Number of inhabitants: approx. 258,000
Surface area: 1,651.39 km²

The district of Leipzig lies south of the independent city of Leipzig on the border between Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony-Anhalt in the west and Thuringia in the southwest; to the north and east it is joined by the district of Nordsachsen and to the southeast by the district of Mittelsachsen. The district is located in the Leipziger Tieflandsbucht and is quite flat. Worth mentioning are the many lakes of the Leipziger Neuseenland in the west of the district, which were created by flooding of former brown coal mines.
