The most important branches of industry include mechanical and automotive engineering, transport and logistics, as well as microelectronics, biotechnology, the IT industry and crafts. Tourism also plays an important role.

In addition to the flourishing economy, Saxony also has a strong education system. The PISA study has shown that Saxon pupils are best educated. There are many specialisations at Saxony's universities, such as mining and micro-electronics. In addition to the universities, important, successful research is also carried out at institutes. The TU Dresden has among other things the status "Elite University".
