Medical check-up

Regular medical check-ups and controls are very important, especially for babies and children, and serve to maintain health. In childhood, certain medical examinations are recommended by a doctor and the reimbursement of costs by the statutory health insurance funds is legally prescribed. Other examinations are a useful supplementary option, but nevertheless recommendable. The most important examinations are U1 - U9. These are covered by the health insurance funds and are so-called compulsory benefits. These examinations check the age-appropriate development of your child. The legal basis for this is § 26 SGB V. This is regulated in particular in the Directive of the Joint Federal Committee on the Early Detection of Diseases in Children (so-called "Children's Directive"). The Federal Associations of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, the German Hospital Association and the Central Association of the Health Insurance Funds form this Joint Federal Committee, which is regulated by law in § 91 SGB V. The Federal Committee of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, the German Hospital Association and the Central Association of the Statutory Health Insurance Funds (Spitzenverband Bund der Krankenkassen) form this Joint Federal Committee.

In addition, examinations U10 and U11 as well as J1 and J2 are carried out at school age. The J1 is the only one, which is taken over financially by all health insurance companies. The other three are also recommended by paediatricians and adolescent doctors.
Most preventive appointments take place in the morning. Employees should therefore inform their employer in good time. A home office day may also be an option.

U1 - Examination immediately after birth at the place of delivery
U2 - between the 3rd and 10th day of life
U3 - in the 4. to 5. week of life (variable 3. - 8. week of life)
U4 - between the 3rd and 4th month of life
U5 - 6th to 7th month of life
U6 - around the 1st birthday (10th - 12th month of life)
U7 - around the 2nd birthday (21. - 24. month of life)
U7a - around the 3rd birthday (34th - 36th month of life)
U8 - around the 4th birthday (46th - 48th month of life)
U9 - around the 5th birthday (60th - 64th month of life)
U10 - for children between 7 and 8 years old
U11 - for children between 9 and 10 years old
J1- for adolescents between 12 and 14 years of age
J2 - for young people between 16 and 17 years of age

Questions and answers

With whom do I make an appointment for an early detection check-up?

The first way should lead to the pediatrician of your choice. Perhaps you have a recommendation from your private environment. If you don't have a paediatrician yet, look for a paediatrician near your home. When asking for an appointment, clarify whether the practice can admit your child as a new patient. This way you should quickly find a doctor. If it doesn't work out, ask your health insurance or former midwife. The statutory health insurance funds must name you immediately a name of a physician who is ready to treat your legally insured child, § 26 SGB V, in order to ensure the provision of care.

In the case of patients with statutory health insurance, your paediatrician and adolescent doctor can only bill you for the performance of the early detection examination up to the end of the tolerance period. If you no longer get an appointment within the tolerance period, try to find another paediatrician near your place of residence. If, despite all your efforts, you still cannot make an appointment for your child, please contact the health department of your city or district. The statutory health insurance funds must inform you and your legally insured child immediately of the name of a physician who is willing to treat your child, § 26 SGB V.
